Yakult History

Timeline

  • 1930 – Dr. Minoru Shirota successfully cultured a bacterium that could survive the acidic conditions of the stomach to reach the intestines.

  • 1935 – The first Yakult bottles were produced and marketed in Japan, with the name derived from “jahurto,” the Esperanto word for yogurt.

  • 1955 – Yakult Honsha Co., Ltd. was established in Tokyo to manage production and research.

  • 1963 – The iconic “Yakult Lady” home delivery system was launched, which remains a key part of their distribution.

  • 1964-1970s – International expansion began, with Taiwan in 1964, Brazil in 1968, and the Philippines in 1975.

  • 1968 – The iconic, small, thin-necked plastic bottle designed by Isamu Kenmochi was introduced.

  • Today – Over 30-40 million bottles are consumed daily in over 40 countries and regions.
